SUMMARY (07/05/2012): Syrians came out in huge numbers today to choose between a range of brilliant candidates from a variety of new political parties that represent the diversity of Syrian society. These candidates were competing to be elected to a parliament that does more than perfect the art of clapping on cue, but now has real powers to shape legislation and take Syria forward into a bright future… No, not really. At least 31 people were killed by Assad’s forces today (mostly in Homs, Hama, Deir Ezzor, Damascus), many places were raided by soldiers and armored vehicles, communities were shelled and many homes were burned down while several hundred thousand people remain displaced. Sounds like ideal conditions for an election, no?
